‘Eid Morning Ceremony (per Sidi – 9/08)
On the morning of ‘Eid, have an odd number of dates at a normal breakfast time after the Fajr prayer. Eat nothing else until you gather for the Eid celebration.
Turn in Zakat al-Fitr – This money is given to the poor prior to Eid al-Fitr. Each householder or single person pays what they normally pay for themselves and everyone in their family to eat for one day. This is so that everyone has something to eat on this day, even those who have little food. Five to twenty dollars per person is normal in our country. Sidi has been asking for twenty dollars per person. This must be given before the start of the ‘Eid prayer!!!
Important note: It essential that you pay Zakat al-Fitr prior to Eid, or else you will lose the blessings of your Ramadan fast.
Sidi asks that you send you Zakat al-Fitr to the Shadhiliyya Sufi Center, Attn: Salih Cotten, P.O. Box 100, Pope Valley, CA 94567.
Parade of the Prophet (pbuh) Optional– The Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) was to parade from the mosque out one road and return by another. Say the Takbeer, which is written below, while you walk.
Dhikr (Takbeer)
Before the Imam arrives for the ‘Eid prayer, the congregation says:
“Allahu akbar Allahu akbar Allahu akbar
Laa ilaha illa-llah
Wa-llahu akbar Allahu akbar
Wa li-llahi-l-hamd”
“Allah is greatest; Allah is supreme!
There is no god but God
And Allah is Greatest
And to Allah be praise.” (See below for longer version.)
Repeat this dhikr many times – fifteen to thirty minutes or more – until the Imam is ready to lead the prayer.
‘Eid Prayer (Start at 9:00 AM).
Do not perform any voluntary prayer either before or after the ‘Eid prayer. There is neither call to prayer (adhan) nor commencement (iqamah) for ‘Eid prayer.
The ‘Eid prayer is 2 rak‘ahs (like Fajr salah). The Imām recites al-Fatihah and sūrahs out loud and the people say “Āmīn” aloud after the Fatihah. It is Sunnah to recite the 87th Surah (al-A‘la) in the first rak‘ah and the 88th (al-Ghashiyah) in the second rak‘ah; or 109 (al-Kafirun) in first rak‘ah and 112 (al-Ikhlas) in the second rak‘ah.
- Say one time “Allahu Akbar!” to begin the prayer.
- Then say seven times “Allah Akbar!” (raising hand behind ears for each one and clasp right hand over left before the next one). After completing then begin to recite the Fātihah.
- Say “Allahu Akbar” five times before the Fatihah in the second rak‘ah.
Al-Khutbah: Sermons The Imam gives two short sermons, khutbahs. Sit in between them and ask for forgiveness. The two khutbahs should be no longer than 20 minutes together. Open first sermon by calling “Allahu Akbar” 9 times and before the second sermon call “Allahu Akbar” 7 times.
‘Eid Dhikr
After the Khutbahs, begin the dhikr with everyone standing in a circle. Set the intention for the Dhikr and say:
“La ilaha illa-llah (7 times)
Muhammadan Rasulu-llahAlayhi salatu-llah”
Then du’a:
“In the name of Allah, we pray at the beginning of ‘Eid.
We ask You Allah, please accept our Ramadan prayer and fasting for Your face.
Give us Your blessing and keep us on the straight path.
Use us to carry Your message and Your religion; The religion of the Unity, The message of Love, Peace, Mercy, and Justice.”
Say: “Al-Fatiha”
Then du’a:
“Please Beloved God, give us Your mercy.
Give Your mercy to our parents, our children, our families and our neighbors.
And give Peace to everyone in all the world, without separation.
Amin.”
Now make Dhikr.
After Dhikr, let the communal feasting begin! Don’t overeat! And remember to keep the Dhuhr prayer.
‘Eid lasts three days; on the fourth day, you should begin to make up any missed days from Ramadan.
Eid Mubarak!
