Making a Gift for the Future
A charitable bequest is one of the simplest ways to support SSC’s future. These thoughtful gifts, full of baraka, ensure that the we can continue our important work of spreading Sidi’s teachings of Sufism and the message of Peace, Love, Mercy, Justice and Freedom to future generations.
How to Create a Future Gift to SSC
Create a future gift to SSC by including a bequest provision in your will or revocable trust. A bequest can be a specific gift to SSC (“I bequeath the sum of Ten Thousand [$10,000] Dollars”). It can also be a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate after taxes, expenses and other specific bequests have been paid — what’s known as the residue (“I bequeath Ten [10%] Percent of the residue of my estate”). A complete list of bequest types is below.
Restricted vs. Unrestricted Gifts
An unrestricted gift is a gift SSC can use strategically to support our top priorities. If you would like to make a gift for a specific purpose (also known as a “restricted gift”), contact us to set up a phone appointment; we want to be sure we perfectly understand your wishes. Your support will help ensure that Sidi’s teachings and Allah’s message are made available to all those searching for the Peace and the Love through a closer connection with God.
How to Name SSC in Your Will or Trust
If it’s in your heart to do this, it’s important to schedule a meeting with your attorney and add the correct legal language to your document when updating your will. If you wish to include SSC in your will or estate plan, please name us as:
The Shadhiliyya Sufi Center (SSC) dba Shadhiliyya Sufi Communities, a nonprofit corporation with tax identification number 31-1580879, organized and existing under the laws of the state of Wyoming, and with principal business address of 5500 Military Trail, Suite 22-219, Jupiter, FL 33458
** Please let us know if you have chosen to make a bequest to SSC.**
Benefits of a Bequest
- Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime.
- A bequest under your will or revocable trust can complement your lifestyle and commitments today while supporting SSC tomorrow.
- You can modify your bequest if your circumstances change.
- You can direct your bequest to a particular purpose (be sure to check with SSC to make sure your gift can be used as intended).
- There is no upper limit on the estate tax deductions that can be taken for charitable bequests
Types of Bequests
Specific Bequest: Is one where you describe exactly what you want to leave to a specific individual or organization and specifically designate the source. If you want to leave a specific dollar amount from a specific source or a particular item (such as an antique or collector’s item), this is the type of bequest that you would use. Example: Abdullah states in his will: “I leave my woodworking tools to my son, ‘Isa. I also leave my securities to SSC.”
General Bequest: This type of bequest does not specify the source from which it should be paid. This gives your executor the flexibility to honor the bequest from any available source. Example: Maryam states in her will: “I leave $10,000 to SSC.”
Residuary Bequest: This type of bequest is honored after all other bequests have been made, and all debts, expenses and taxes have been paid. Example: Munira states in her will: “I give all the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate to SSC.”
Contingent Bequest: This type of bequest is fulfilled if certain conditions are met. For instance, if your primary beneficiary does not survive you, you can indicate your next choice through a contingent designation.
Example: Abdullah states in his will: “I give all the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate to my wife, Sarah, if she survives me; if not, then 50 percent in equal shares to my children who survive me and 50 percent to SSC.“
Things to Consider
The remaining balance in your retirement plan can also make a tax-wise gift to SSC. This, and similar instruments (such as an insurance policies, and other qualified accounts) should be directed to us through your account’s Successor Beneficiary Form, instead of through your will or trust.
Follow these steps:
- Ask your fund manager or human resources department for the beneficiary form. It may even be available online if you have online account access.
- Name SSC as a beneficiary of all or part of your 401(k), life insurance policy or other qualified account.
- Return the form to your fund manager or Human Resources department, and then we hope you will let us know about your gift.
- If you are naming us as a beneficiary of your 401(k), there may be an additional step. Please contact us for details.
The more narrowly you restrict the use of your bequest, the greater the risk that the program or activity you want to support won’t be as relevant when we receive your gift in the future. Please consult with us as you are drafting your will if you want to restrict the use of your bequest.
Please let us know in advance if you intend to bequeath real estate, a business interest, or other specialized property to SSC.
Example of legal language to include in your will or trust:
“I bequeath the sum of Ten Thousand [$10,000] Dollars to the Shadhiliyya Sufi Center (SSC) dba Shadhiliyya Sufi Communities, a nonprofit corporation with tax identification number 31-1580879, organized and existing under the laws of the state of Wyoming, and with principal business address of 5500 Military Trail, Suite 22-219, Jupiter, FL 33458.
