Hijama is Prophetic Medicine

Hijama, which loosely translates as “cupping,” is an ancient, prophetic healing method which has been practiced all around the world, in some places for thousands of years. Hijama is a Divine remedy which has come to us through all of the prophets (sallallahu alayhim wa sallim). It heals the body, heart, mind, and soul, by Allah’s permission and with His help.

Our guide, Sidi Muhammad (qaddasallahu sirrahu), taught groups of students how to perform hijama safely and effectively beginning in 2007. At that time, Sidi shared that the Prophet Ibrahim, the Prophet Musa, the Prophet Dawud, and the Prophet Sulayman (alayhim as-salam) all practiced hijama. The Prophet Ibrahim practiced it on his sons (alayhim as-salam) and passed it down to his descendants in writing. The Prophet Musa performed hijama on the Prophet Harun (alayhim as-salam). The Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) received hijama, and there are many recorded sayings in which praises its effectiveness. This prophetic tradition is a blessing for all who choose to receive it, give it, and teach it, alhamdulillah.

How Hijama Works

On the physical level, hijama uses suction to bring toxic blood, phlegm, and other material to the surface of the body for detoxification. When practiced with deep faith in Allah, hijama becomes more than a physical cleansing–it also cleanses toxic emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. It transforms veils of darkness and is a form of true healing.

The angels (alayhim as-salam) recommended hijama to the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) and his community. The Prophet told us, “The best treatment you have is cupping.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3857). When teaching his students hijama, Sidi emphasized the role the angels play in the healing. The angels provide powerful support to the practitioner and the patient, and it is extremely important for them to have complete faith in the process.
