Hadith for Following the Sufi Way
A 3-class series
with `Abd al-Haqq Godlas
Hadith as a Part of your Spiritual Journey
Deepen your walking through understanding the sayings of Muhammad, the Seal of the Allah’s messengers, upon whom be peace.
On the path of Islam, among the principal sources that aid our hearts and minds in becoming aware of Allah and in receiving Allah’s merciful love are Qur’anic revelation—received by Muhammed ﷺ from Allah—as well as hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. Hadith are statements he made or direct reports of what he did.
In this three-class series, we will study hadith as a part of our spiritual journey. This class will provide a roadmap for understanding how to navigate some of the vast knowledge that has come to us through the Prophet ﷺ, and for incorporating that guidance within our own spiritual understanding.
Class Schedule
- Class 1: Tue, Sept. 16th @ 2:00 pm ET
- Class 2: Tue, Sept. 23rd @ 2:00 pm ET
- Class 3: Tue, Sept. 30th @ 2:00 pm ET
Class 1
Class 1 will cover topics including:
- The significance of the hadith and why they matter to us
- A framework for understanding hadith in the light of the Sufi way, including what they tell us about knowledge, God and reality, humanity, consciousness, life’s purposes, and methods of fulfilling those purposes
- Basic terminology, structure, collections, and reliability of the hadith
Classes 2 & 3
Classes 2 and 3 will provide examples of specific hadith that relate to the topics introduced in class one and that are especially beneficial within our Sufi path, including subjects such as:
- Modes of knowing (‘ilm and ma’rifa) and their interpretation
- God’s qualities and signs, levels of reality, creation, and the hereafter
- Human nature, key categories of humans (e.g., prophets and saints) and human identities
- Psychological and spiritual faculties of consciousness, and states and spiritual stations
- The purposes of creation and human lives, and methods of fulfilling those purposes, including spiritual, legal, social, and political methods
Understanding Umrah
Umrah is voluntary act of worship that holds great significance and offers abundant rewards in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged us to perform Umrah at least once in our lifetime.
As the season of Umrah tavel groups approaches, this class will teach you the essential rituals of Umrah according to the Shafi’i way. This includes making intention, wearing ihram, performing tawaf, sa’i and hair cutting.
We will explore the importance of Umrah as an act of worship and discover important supplications to recite throughout the visit. Insha’allah, the class will describe its rewards and how it can refresh one’s faith and himmah. The etiquette of visiting Medina and the Prophet will also be covered.
“One Umrah is an expiation of sins committed between it and the next Umrah.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773)

Join this Weekly Support Group
As we age, we may find it more difficult to try new things or to re-establish activities that enrich our lives. This can happen without us even noticing, until one day we realize our lives are more limited than we’d like.
Let’s gather and explore how to thrive, and not just survive, in our 70s and beyond!
What to Expect
Class Schedule
In this weekly support group we will explore what “thriving” and “surviving” mean to each of us. Looking with the eye of the heart, we’ll examine different areas of our lives and ask ourselves: Am I thriving? Or am I just surviving?
In the areas we’re just surviving, we will support each other in setting intentions and identifying realistic next steps we would like to take, insha’allah.
You are free to attend this group as needed, according to the schedule that works best for you.
Dates: Mondays
Time: 9:30 am – 10:30 am PT / 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm ET
