Hello,
I hope you are well. My mother passed away just over a month ago. My stepfather, her husband, would like to reserve his place next to her and install his tombstone (mandatory where we live in Canada). He would like to know if, from a religious perspective, it is acceptable for him to install his tombstone already, considering he is in good health, thanks to God. Your opinion would be of great help. Thank you very much, and may God bless you.

Hello, I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. I pray Allah covers you and all of your loved ones in patience, mercy and gentle healing in your time of grieving. Regarding your father’s tombstone, religiously speaking, it is perfectly acceptable for him to place his tombstone next to hers now.
If you are asking about sources:
On the burial of his companion`Uthman ibn Maz`un, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him) said, “I am marking my brother’s grave with it [a stone], and I shall bury beside him those of my family who die.” [Abu Dawud]
In terms of doing so ahead of time, it would be permissible or even recommended as it serves as a reminder to prepare for leaving this life behind.
I hope that helps and facilitates ease for you all. May Allah keep you in His Mercy.
Peace be upon you,
Said
